FAITH FORMATION FAQ’s

1. How often will my child meet for class?

Students meet twice a month for in-person learning at our parish center. Please see the calendar for dates.

2. Why aren’t weekly classes offered anymore?

The drop-off system for faith formation has not worked for some time. We are offering a hybrid program for three reasons:

  • Despite their busy schedules, parents have told us that they benefit from learning with their child.
  • This model enables parents to be flexible in scheduling faith formation time around their other activities.
  • We do not have a large enough volunteer base to offer weekly classes.

3. What is the benefit of teaching at home versus in class?

The family is the first and best community a child has. It has the most significant influence on the child’s religious understanding. Parish involvement is a support, but not the primary provider of faith formation. While class attendance is ideal, we understand when it is not possible.

4. How is the cost of Faith Formation registration determined?

Tuition covers more than the student workbook. It also includes building use, supplies, salaries, speakers, and extra-curricular activities. The parish does not make a profit. In fact, Faith Formation is subsidized $25,000 through the weekly offertory.

5. What if my child is missing a sacrament?

If an older child needs to be baptized, please contact Tina in the parish office at 508-697-9528 to make arrangements. If your child is outside the usual sacramental grades of 2, 8 and 9, please note this on the registration form, stating the sacraments needed. We will work with you to find a plan suitable for your family.

6. Why is there a Mass attendance requirement?

Going to class shapes the mind while participating in the Mass forms the heart. This requirement is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching and is key in preparing for the sacraments. The Mass provides a context for the sacraments, allowing children to learn that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. Regular Mass attendance helps them understand the significance of the Eucharist and its connection to their happiness. Holy Mother Church, in her wisdom, has included Mass attendance as one of the precepts of the Church. These precepts help us attain heaven. https://www.usccb.org/sites/default/files/flipbooks/catechism/494/

7. What if I can’t afford to pay for faith formation?

Financial hardship is never an obstacle to faith formation. If there are financial difficulties, please contact Debbie Hill, Faith Formation Director (508-697-3652) to discuss assistance.
